Yes. UK summer UV regularly reaches 6 to 8, which is high enough to burn, and a UPF50+ umbrella blocks at least 98 per cent of it. The Ombriel Loop's black lining blocks 99 per cent. It will not replace sunscreen, but between 11 am and 3 pm it is the shade you already have with you.
A UV umbrella sounds like something for Seville. But the UK gets more strong sun than its reputation suggests, and an umbrella you already carry for rain is the easiest shade there is. Here is what the ratings mean and whether they matter here.
How strong is UK sun?
The Met Office UV index runs from 1 to 11+. In a British summer it regularly reaches 6 or 7 in the south and can reach 8 on clear days in June and July. Anything from 3 upwards is where the NHS advises protecting skin. So for roughly four months of the year, and on any bright day at lunchtime, UK sun is strong enough to matter, especially for children, prams and anyone who burns easily.
What does UPF50+ mean?
UPF is to fabric what SPF is to sunscreen. It says how much UV gets through. UPF 15 lets through about 1 in 15 (roughly 93 per cent blocked). UPF 30 blocks about 97 per cent. UPF 50 blocks 98 per cent. UPF50+ is the top rating and means at least 98 per cent blocked; the Ombriel Loop lining blocks 99 per cent. Most plain umbrella fabric, with no coating, sits somewhere around UPF 5 to 15, which is why standing under an ordinary umbrella on a beach does not stop you burning.
Why is the inside of a UV umbrella black?
Two things happen to UV at a canopy. Some passes through the fabric, and some bounces off pavement, water or sand and comes up underneath. A black inner coating absorbs UV rather than reflecting it, so it blocks what comes through the top and does not bounce what comes from below back onto your face. It also makes the underside noticeably cooler to stand under than a light-coloured canopy, because the coating stops light scattering inside the dome. The outside can be any colour; it is the inside that does the work.
Does the UV coating affect rain performance?
No. The UV coating goes on the inner face. The outer face carries the water-repellent finish that makes rain bead and shake off. The two do different jobs on different sides of the same fabric. On the Loop the outer fabric is a high-density pongee rated to a 1500 mm water column, and the inside is the black UV layer.
When is a UV umbrella worth it in the UK?
- Pushing a pram in summer. A UPF50+ umbrella clipped to the handlebar is more shade than most pram parasols, and it stays put.
- Waiting for anything outdoors at midday: a bus, a school gate, a queue.
- Fair skin, or medication that makes skin sun-sensitive.
- Anyone who already carries an umbrella most days. The UV layer costs nothing extra in weight and it turns a rain umbrella into a two-season one.
When is it not?
It will not replace sunscreen on exposed arms, and it does not help much before 10 am or after 4 pm when the sun is low and coming in sideways. It is shade, not a shield. But for the hours in the middle of a bright day, it is the shade you happen to have with you.
